Well, we’re into 2025 now, so we’ll see how things end up going over the next few years.
I’ve still not picked up the Fitlet3: this is just an “other expenses more important” thing, but I’ve got its configuration nailed down finally.
I was going to use OPNsense for the firewall VM, but some testing with a RouterOS VM using one of the CHR licenses I have ended up a lot better than OPNsense did. That means RouterOS for the edge device for the case network continues on!
That also means I don’t need as much RAM for the Fitlet, so that’ll keep costs down a little. RouterOS really doesn’t need much at all to run, so it plus a lightweight domain controller and two Linux VMs will easily fit within 8GB of RAM. Things are looking up, though this project might be pushed to 2026 at this rate as the rest of what I own still hasn’t made its way up here, and that has the AP and the switch we’re going to use.
We’re kind of in a holding pattern for now. I’ve not got a lot of reason to test the RouterOS VM as it worked perfectly, so it’s just a matter of getting everything up here, getting the Fitlet3 ordered, installing Proxmox on it, then spinning the VMs up, whenever that happens.
Until next time!
