5G Transition and Initial Testing

I mentioned in the last post about using the testing server with an OPNsense VM connected to my T-Mobile Home Internet box with success. I decided to work from this, get my hands on a NETGEAR M5, the 5G version of the MR1100 we used all those years ago, perform the necessary adjustments on it, spin a VM back up, and like magic, it all worked properly.

I did some testing over this last weekend with this, and IPv6 was effectively stable. It initially was not, but some research online located the proper iptables/ip6tables rules to use, and with those applied, it was quite stable with IPv6. I may have done something by modifying dpinger rules yesterday afternoon on OPNsense, but reenabling gateway monitoring on IPv6 and rebooting the VM brought things back up.

While this is not permanent, of course, I do have the VM’s configuration exported, so once I get the Fitlet in here, I can very easily spin this back up. Sadly, that date keeps getting pushed further and further into the future…

If anything, the scenario of powering the firewall VM (and the host itself) upon waking on the last day, reenabling WiFi on the M5, and using that instead seemed to work properly. While there is less of a need for this with people having smartphones these days, sometimes a laptop is the preferred device to check some stuff.

Alas, with my move and the primary con we all went to moving venues and times, the need for this is diminishing… oh well, I’m sure at some point in the future there will be some trip I want to take where this will come in handy.

Further testing to come!
